Top-down gas firebox layers Cooking grates on top, inverted-V flavorizer bars over the burner tubes, electrode at the left tube. TOP DOWN · GAS FIREBOX 1 cooking grates 2 flavorizer bars 3 burner tubes + ports 4 electrode (left tube) LAYERS (top → bottom) 1 Grates — food sits here 2 Flavorizer / heat tents 3 Burner tubes + ports 4 Electrode at left port Lift grates, then tents, to reach tubes. Gas off. Fig. — Firebox, top down: grates, flavorizer bars, burner tubes, electrode. Grease drip path from grate to cup Fat hits flavorizer bars, sheds to the firebox floor, runs the rear rail, drops into the cup. SIDE · DRIP PATH 1 grates 2 flavorizers shed fat 3 firebox floor 4 rear rail 5 cup A packed cup backs grease into the burners and the tank cabinet. Empty the cup, scrape the rail, reseat so the drop lands in the pan — not the island. Fig. — Drip path: grates → flavorizers → floor → rail → cup. Flare-ups are fuel (grease) meeting oxygen on a hot surface. Fat drips through gaps in worn Flavorizers/tents, hits the tube or firebox, and flashes. This is different from a grease fire after the cook in the tray.
Procedure
Lid open. Note whether flames lick through a hole in a tent or only when fatty food is over a gap.
Cool down. Grates off. Inspect tents/bars for lace and missing peaks.
Replace tents that show daylight — when to replace heat plates .
Scrape the firebox floor and the grease tray .
Re-seat tents so no port row is naked from the front.
Trim excess fat on the next cook; keep a safe zone.
Persistent one-zone flare: that tent or the tube under it — measure burner tube if ordering.
Model-specific tents: use the finder or brand hubs.
FAQ
Do I need a new grill?
Not for flare-ups alone. Rusted-through firebox is a different call — repair vs replace rusted firebox .
Wire brush the tents?
Prefer a scraper. Wire bristles: bristle-free vs wire .
