Built-in silo
Built-in / pro outdoor kitchen parts
You own a $3k–$10k island grill, not a $400 cart. The masonry, gas stub, and 120 V stay. The job is matching a chassis plate to a part — or deciding the head is done. This is a parts and how-to silo, not a company.
What an island grill actually is
- A head in a cutout. The island is millwork or masonry. The grill is a stainless box dropped into a hole. Parts are chassis-specific; the hood badge is not a model number.
- 120 V ignition. Hot-surface glow or a spark module — not a Spirit AA tray. Lights dark and no click often means the GFCI or the transformer, not a $4 battery.
- Hard-piped NG or a dedicated LP line. No QCC1 handwheel on most of these. Weak burners after a remodel are a shutoff, a regulator, or a fitting that was never soaped.
- Insulated jacket on combustible islands. Wood, stucco over wood, or a framed cabinet usually needs the manufacturer jacket. Bare masonry may not. The install sheet, not a forum, decides.
Work the problem in order
- Photograph the chassis plate. Width, NG vs LP, rotisserie and sear letters. The hood color is not a SKU.
- If it will not light, diagnose GFCI, transformer, and hot-surface or spark before you order a ceramic.
- If it lights but smells or runs weak, do the soap-and-water leak-check. Island gas is not a cart hose reset.
- Then decide repair versus replace the head. One class of parts on a sound firebox is a repair. Daylight in the floor is a head.

Repair vs replace the head
A transformer is a repair. A rusted firebox in an $8,000 island is a head. Measure the cutout before you shop.
Repair versus replace, short form
- Repair: one class this season — hot-surface element, spark ceramic, one U-burner or IR sear that matches the plate, rotisserie motor, lamps, briquette tray, drip pan — on a firebox that does not show daylight.
- Replace the head: floor or lid rusted through; three or more classes on a 15-year box; manifold or panel fire-damaged; cutout no longer matches current product (ALX2 42 is not a drop-in ALXE-42).
- We do not invent a Lynx or Alfresco price. Search current heads in the same width on Amazon first; use BBQGuys to check a retailer diagram or stock.
Insulated jackets
Combustible islands (wood frame, stucco over wood, many “outdoor kitchen” cabinets) need the maker’s insulating jacket between the firebox and the millwork. Non-combustible masonry sometimes does not. The jacket is a different SKU from the head; widths and years are not interchangeable. Photograph the plate, then search the brand plus width plus “insulating jacket.” Do not skip it to save a gap.
