Healthy burners whisper. A sharp hiss at the control end or a roar along the tube often means primary air / gas mix is wrong: tube not seated on the orifice, shutter wide open, damaged orifice, or early flashback.

Procedure
- Lid open. Note whether the noise is at the valve/shutter or along the port row.
- Flame at the shutter: tank off immediately — flashback procedure.
- Hiss with mostly blue ports: check that the inlet fully covers the brass orifice. Reseat and pin the rear.
- Roar with yellow lazy fire: closed ports or nest — clean / extract before adjusting shutters.
- If the tube has an adjustable shutter, mark the current position before you move it. LP vs NG marks differ.
- Soap test the tank coupling and hose after any reseat.
- Orifice tip damaged or drilled out by a previous owner: that is a valve/orifice job — do not “fix” it with a bigger hole.
- All burners weak and quiet after a tank swap: regulator reset, not a louder orifice.

Can I open the shutter to stop the roar?
Sometimes a shutter left fully closed after a rebuild runs yellow and unstable; fully open can roar. Return to the factory mark for your fuel, then diagnose nests/ports.
