Flashback is gas burning at the venturi / air shutter instead of on the port row. You may see flame licking under the control panel or hear a roar at the inlet. This is the acute version of spider webs in the venturi — treat it as urgent.

Procedure
- Knob off, tank off if flame is already at the shutter. Do not keep feeding it.
- Cold. Disconnect the tank. Remove the burner: rear fastener first, then slide the inlet off the orifice.
- Shine into the venturi. Nest, mud, or a crushed insect screen is the usual culprit.
- Brush from inlet toward the ports. Shake debris out the inlet — never into the valve.
- Hard nest that will not extract: replace the tube. Do not drill the venturi.
- Refit the inlet fully over the brass. A gap recreates flashback even with a clean tube.
- Lid open. Light. Flame must sit on the port row, blue, no fire at the shutter.
- Soap the tank coupling. Still roaring: orifice/valve job — stop and get a tech if you smell gas with knobs off.
FAQ
Is flashback the same as a grease fire?
No. Flashback is gas at the venturi. A grease fire is fat igniting in the box or cabinet.
One burner only?
Almost always that tube’s venturi or orifice seating — not the whole regulator.
