Gas grill will not stay lit

Lights then dies: excess-flow lock, wind, thermocouple on some side burners, or a tube that will not stay on its orifice. Diagnose before replacing the manifold.

Match symptoms: clicks but never lights → ignition repair vs replace. Lights, runs one minute, all burners die → tank/regulator. One burner dies → tube/venturi.

Procedure

  1. Lid open. Wind screen if gusty.
  2. Fresh tank. Slow valve open. Regulator reset.
  3. Light with a stick if the igniter is weak — separate spark from gas.
  4. If it dies only on HIGH with a new tank: excess flow from opening too fast — reset again slower.
  5. Side burner with thermocouple: tip must sit in the flame; bent tip drops out.
  6. Main tube slips off orifice when hot: clamp/bracket failure — reseat and replace hardware.
  7. Soap test hose after any regulator work.
  8. Still dying: spider or ports.

FAQ

Is the grill unsafe?

If you smell gas with knobs off, shut the tank and do not keep lighting. Fix leaks first.
