Warped flavorizer bars or heat plates

Bars that arch, twist, or leave daylight over a burner cause flare-ups and cold stripes — replace them; do not hammer them flat.

Flavorizer bars and heat tents are sacrificial. Once a peak warps so you can see a port row from the front, grease hits the burner and you get flare-ups plus uneven heat. Hammering them flat cracks porcelain and shortens the next set.

Procedure

  1. Cold. Grates off. Sight down each bar/tent with a straight edge.
  2. Daylight over a port row, twisted peaks, or rust holes through the valley → replace that piece (usually the whole set for even height).
  3. Measure length and width. Count pieces. Brand + model search — do not mix Spirit 15.3” into Genesis 17.1”.
  4. Scrape the rail clean so new bars sit level.
  5. Install peaks over tubes. From the front, no naked port row.
  6. Grates on. Preheat. Re-check gaps that open when hot.
  7. Tubes already lace because bars failed first: replace tubes too (measure).
  8. IR Commercial carts: tents under emitters are not the same as emitters — see 463242715 heat plates vs emitters.

FAQ

Can I run without bars for one cook?

Not a good idea. Grease hits the tubes, flare-ups spike, and you accelerate burner failure.
